Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana – PMUY LPG connection to every family About PMUY Prime minister Narendra launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. He launched it on May 1st 2016 in Ballia, UP. According to a WHO report, the unclean smoke inhaled by a women is like burning 400 cigarettes. In addition, women and children strain themselves to collect firewood. The Government aims to safeguard the health of women and children by providing LPG to every household. For this purpose, it launched Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. Under the scheme, the Government plans to provide 5 Crore LPG connections to BPL families BPL – Below Poverty Line. Financial details of PMUY In addition, the Government plans to achieve this target in the next three years. Hence, the running duration of the scheme is from 2016-17 to 2019-20. Konkani Writer Mahabaleshwar Sail Receives Saraswati Samman 2016 Noted Konkani author  Mahabaleshwar Sail  has been honored with the  2016 Saraswati Samman  for his novel  ‘Hawthan’.  The  74-year-old  Sail’s novel Hawthan was published in 2009 and was shortlisted from 22 books written in various languages. The selection for the award was made by a jury presided by former chief justice  A S Anand. Mahabaleshwar Sail received a cash prize of  15 lakh and a citation  as a part of the honor. About Mahabaleshwar Sail Goa based  Mahabaleshwar Sail is a Konkani author who hails from Majoli of Karwar District of Karnataka State. Lok Sabha Clears Maternity Benefits (Amendment) Bill, 2016 To Raise Maternity Leave to 26 Weeks The  Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016  was passed by the Lok Sabha by voice vote on March 10, 2017 that will benefit about 1.8 million women working in organized sector. The bill seeks to increase the  maternity leaves to 26 weeks  by amending the  Maternity Benefits Act, 1961  that provides for 12 weeks of maternity leave. Aim:  To protect the employment of women during the time of pregnancy and entitle them to have full paid absence from work to take care of their child. It will also encourage more women to join the workforce in organised sector. The Labour and Employment Minister  Bandaru Dattatreya  moved the bill for consideration and passage in Lower House. The bill has already been passed by the  Rajya Sabha in August 2016. Current Affairs Today – March 10 2017 Lok Sabha Clears Maternity Benefits (Amendment) Bill, 2016 To Raise Maternity Leave to 26 Weeks i.  The  Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016  was passed by the Lok Sabha by voice vote on March 10, 2017 that will benefit about 1.8 million women working in organized sector. ii.  The bill seeks to increase the  maternity leaves to 26 weeks  by amending the  Maternity Benefits Act, 1961  that provides for 12 weeks of maternity leave. iii.  The Bill will be applicable to the establishments that hire at least 10 or more people. The entitlement will be for only up to  first 2 children .
