Context

World Bamboo Day is celebrated every year on 18th September.

About World Bamboo Day

It was officially established on September 18 at the 8th World Bamboo Congress which was  held in Bangkok in 2009.

It was declared by the Thai Royal Forest Department.

Bamboo in India

According to the National Bamboo Mission, India has the highest area (13.96 million hectares) under bamboo and is the second richest country after China in terms of bamboo diversity with 136 species.

The annual production of bamboo in India is 14.6 million tonnes and the bamboo-rattan industry in the country was worth ₹28,005 crore in 2017.

About National Bamboo Mission

It aims to promote holistic growth of the bamboo sector by adopting area-based,regionally differentiated strategy and to increase the area under bamboo cultivation and marketing.

It was launched as a Centrally Sponsored. Scheme in 2006-07 and was subsumed under Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH).

About World Bamboo Organization

It was set up at the 1992 International Bamboo Congress in Japan. It is an international body for bamboo practitioners dedicated to promote the use of bamboo and bamboo products for the sake of the environment and economy.
