List of Presidents of India

Article 52 of the Indian Constitution states that there shall a President of India. The president is the nominal head of the government, he acts on the advise of the Prime Minister (Council of Minister). All the executive action is taken on the name of President of India. All the MoU signed with any foreign country are on the name of the President of India. The First president of India was Dr. Rajandra Prasad while the current President of India is Shri Ram Nath Kovind. He was elected as the president on 25th July 2017. Let’s have a look at the list of the candidates who have been elected as a President so far.

List of Presidents of India: Important points

  1. He is the constitutional head of the parliamentary system of the government. He is also the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces. He represents the nation but does not rule it. The real power vests with the council of ministers.

  2. President is elected by the electoral college of
    (i) elected members of both house of the Parliament
    (ii) elected members of state legislatures
    (iii) elected members of the legislative assemblies of the Delhi and Puducherry (added by 70th amendment Act, 1992).

  3. Elected for five years but eligible for immediate re- election and can serve any number of terms.

  4. The President can be removed from the post in case it is found that there is any violation of the constitution by the president. This impeachment can be moved in either house of parliament.

  5. The Vice President acts as President in the absence of the president due to death, resignation, impeachment, or other situations if the Vice President seat is vacant then the Chief Justice of India acts as the President of the India.

Presidents of India: Eligibility

The Indian Constitution's Article 58 states a few conditions for a candidates to be eligible for the election of the president. Some of the following have given below:

  1. The President should be a citizen of India.

  2. The President must be above the age of 35 years.

  3. The President should be qualified for election as member of the Lok Sabha.

  4. The President of India should not contain any office of profit under the State Government, Union, and other local authorities.

Presidents of India: Important Facts

  1. Till date seven Presidents have been members of a political party before being elected.

  2. Six of these were active party members of the Congress Party.

  3. Dr.  Rajendra Prasad (first President of India) is the only person to have held office for two terms.

  4. Incumbent President Ram Nath Kovind was the Governor of Bihar before becoming the President of India.
